Room 5 learning community

Welcome to the Room 5 Learning Community

Welcome to Room 5's web page for 2012. Room 5 is a year 5/6 composite class. There are 24 children in Room 5 this year, 15 year six students (9 boys and 6 girls) and 8 year five students (all girls). Our teacher is Miss Davey.

Our year so far

Room 5 got off to a great start this year. The children worked really hard to develop our Room 5 Treaty, that has set the tone for the class this year. We now have 24 students who are all working well together to complete tasks and share our learning space.

The big news for the year so far has been the start of our science inquiry. The children were all very enthusiastic about growing crystals, germinating seeds and observing chemical changes. So far we have made lava lamps, Alka seltzer rockets and salt crystals.

Through these experiments, the children have been learning about the scientific process. This includes asking questions, developing fair tests, recording observations, coming to conclusions and planning next steps. This term we hope to apply and share this knowledge with the wider community, through our science fair projects.

We are also combining our scientific study with our literacy learning. Last term the children began to build up their scientific vocabulary while learning to read and follow experiment instructions. We have also begun learning to write up our own scientific methods, ideas and conclusions, using procedural writing skills. Parents can see our whole class example with success criteria on the back wall of our class.

In Maths we have been learning addition and subtraction skills in our numeracy time. This term we are moving into multiplication and division skills, so the children need to be lerning thier times tables as part of thier weekly homework. We have also done some work on time telling skills in strand maths.

Our other skills focus areas so far this year include-

  • Maori language with Miss Mill
  • Playing the ukulele and singing in music
  • Sketching and creating texture in art
  • Athletics in PE
  • Developing our herb garden for EOTC
  • Creating crafts for community contribution to sports' night
  • Kite making skills in art/science/maori

Miss Davey meeting all of the parents for three way interviews in week 10. This is a lovely opportunity for her to meet you all and for your children to share their learning and future goals with you. Please keep working on the children's goals with them.

If you couldn't make the parent interviews, please feel free to make a time to come and meet Miss Davey and discuss your children's goals.

Rumarima's Adventures

Introducing Rumarima (Room 5's mascot). Rumarima was a gift to Room 5, from a student who left at the end of 2011. We thought that Rumarima would be a fun way to share the things that we do as a class, with our classmates and with our families outside of school.

The children will be given opportunities throughout the year to take Rumarima home, along with the class camera, to take photos that show things they do. These photos will then be shared in a class diary or on our web page.

Rumarima Goes Mountain Biking

On Saturday 24th of March Rumarima went on his first adventure. He went mountain biking with Brooke, Lindsay, Dylan, Benjamin and Shantae. They went to Sanders Reserve in Albany. They rode bikes, found a lizard in the grass and found a crab in the rock pools.

Rumarima is looking forward to his trip to Australia with Ben next week.
